Product details
Fire extinguisher ball for automatic fire suppression
The FireSpray fire extinguisher ball is a single fire ball that works on its own. It activates within seconds of touching flame, bursts and releases dry powder over the fire. You can throw it into a small fire from a safe distance, or mount it above a risk so it works even when nobody is in the room. There is no pin, no hose and no gauge to read, so anyone can use it, including elderly family members and shop staff who have never handled an extinguisher. The price for one ball is shown above (plus GST).
Which fires does it work on?
- Class A: wood, paper, cloth and cardboard.
- Class B: flammable liquids such as petrol and diesel.
- Class C: flammable gas fires. Shut off the gas supply first if you can do it safely.
- Electrical fires: meter boards, wiring and distribution panels.
It is not the right tool for a pan of burning cooking oil; use a K-type kitchen fire extinguisher or a fire blanket there. It is also not meant for a fire that is already spreading through a room. In that case, leave and call the fire brigade on 101.
Throw it or mount it
| How you use it | What happens | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Throw | Throw it into the small fire from a safe distance. It bursts when it touches flame. | Someone who sees a fire start and does not want to go close |
| Mount | Fix it above the risk. It bursts by itself when flames reach it. | Meter boards, store rooms and other spots that are often unattended |
Where to place one fire ball
- Above an electrical meter board or distribution panel
- In the kitchen, near the stove but away from its direct heat
- Inside a store room, shop or small godown
- In a car, van, truck or boat
One ball protects one spot. If you want cover in several places, the fire ball pack of 4 is better value. Our home fire safety guide and car fire safety guide show how a ball fits with other equipment.
Fire ball or portable extinguisher?
| Fire ball | Portable extinguisher | |
|---|---|---|
| Starts by | Itself in flame, or by throwing | Pull pin, aim, squeeze |
| Best for | One small, fixed risk | Fighting a fire by hand |
| Needs someone present | No, when mounted | Yes |
A ball is not a full replacement for an extinguisher. Keep a compact ABC type fire extinguisher nearby. For larger spaces such as basement parking, a ceiling mounted fire extinguisher covers more area.
Using it safely
- Keep a clear exit behind you.
- For an electrical fire, switch off the power if you can do it safely.
- Throw the ball into the base of the fire, never towards a person.
- Step back. The ball bursts and spreads a cloud of powder.
- Leave if the fire grows. Ventilate the room once the fire is out.
Monthly check
There is no gauge to read. Once a month, check that the shell has no cracks or damage, the ball is still in its place, and nothing has been stacked in front of or around it. A ball that has burst is used up and should be replaced with a new one.

All questionsCan I keep a fire extinguisher ball in my car?
Yes. Keep it in a fixed spot where it will not roll around, and also carry a car fire extinguisher for fires you need to fight by hand.
Is a fire ball enough instead of a fire extinguisher?
No. A ball protects one small, fixed risk. Keep a portable ABC extinguisher nearby for any fire you need to fight by hand.
Should I buy a single fire ball or the pack of 4?
Buy a single ball for one risk, such as one meter board. If you want cover in two or more places, the pack of 4 is better value.
Does a fire ball need refilling or servicing?
No. It has no gauge or pin. Once a month check that the shell is undamaged and still in place; a ball that has burst is replaced with a new one.
How does a fire extinguisher ball work?
The ball bursts when it touches flame and releases dry powder over the fire. You can throw it into a fire or mount it above a risk for automatic protection.
Where should a fire ball be mounted?
Above meter boards and electrical panels, in kitchens and stores, or keep one in a vehicle.
