What the balls can and cannot do
The balls work on Class A fires (wood, paper, cloth), Class B fires (petrol, diesel), Class C gas fires and electrical fires. They are not meant for a pan of burning cooking oil; keep a fire blanket or a kitchen fire extinguisher for that. They are also not a replacement for a hand-held extinguisher. Pair the pack with an ABC powder fire extinguisher so you can still fight a fire by hand.
Mounting tips
- Fix each ball directly above the risk, where flames would reach it first.
- Choose a spot where it will not be knocked by people, trolleys or stock.
- In a kitchen, keep it near the stove but out of its direct heat.
- In a vehicle, keep it fixed so it does not roll.
- Tell everyone at the site what the balls are, so nobody moves them.
Monthly check
With four balls in four places, a quick monthly walk-round helps. Check that each shell is undamaged, each ball is still where you placed it, and nothing has been stacked in front of it. A ball that has burst is used up; replace it with a new one.
